Lédger® Live™ recovery is closely connected to the Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP), which acts as the backup for the private keys associated with a Ledger wallet. If a Ledger hardware device is lost, damaged, or replaced, the recovery phrase can be used to restore access to the associated accounts on a compatible Ledger device. Ledger explains that the recovery phrase is the essential backup for wallet access and must be protected carefully.
How Ledger Wallet Recovery Works
- Obtain a genuine replacement or compatible Ledger hardware device.
- Begin the device setup process and select the recovery option.
- Enter the existing Secret Recovery Phrase directly on the Ledger device when prompted.
- Complete the setup and reinstall the cryptocurrency applications and accounts you need.
- Verify your restored accounts and balances before making transactions.
The recovery process restores access to blockchain accounts rather than moving coins from the old physical device. Your cryptocurrency remains recorded on the relevant blockchain; the recovery phrase enables the private keys needed to access those accounts.
Protect Your Recovery Phrase
Security is the most important part of wallet recovery. Ledger recommends keeping the Secret Recovery Phrase offline, private, and protected from loss or damage. Never type your recovery phrase into a website, computer, smartphone, email, or online form. Ledger also states that it will never ask users for their recovery phrase.
